8 Principles of Leadership(as captured in PLANT magazine, Nov 2003):
Who better to talk about leadership than former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani. Discussing 'Leadership when it matters most', Giuliani provided the concluding keynote speech at the recent AME/CME international Lean conference. With admirable honesty and simplicity Giuliani defined a leader as "someone able to inspire others to do better than they normally would", and offered the following 8 principles of leadership.
TEAMWORK ...
"You can't tackle complex issues on your own."
COMMUNICATION ...
"You must describe what you need. It's the sum of all the other principles."
PEOPLE ...
"If you truly love and care for other people, you will be an exceptional leader."
ETHICS ...
"The real art is playing within the rules and winning. Otherwise you create great jeopardy for yourself and your company."
COURAGE ...
"This is often misunderstood. It's not the absence of fear, it's overcoming fear to do what you have to do. You can't exercise courage without feeling fear."
RELENTLESS PREPARATION ...
"Leaders are made through training, preparation, study. The gathering of knowledge is the key to mastering anything."
BELIEFS ...
"You can't be a leader without knowing what you believe in."
OPTIMISM ...
"This doesn't mean being a fool, or not recognizing the real risks." People follow solutions to their problems.
