Introduction to Pull Systems
Description:
This one day workshop includes on the floor hands on experience and is divided into two sessions.
Morning Session:
Participants obtain the ‘big picture’ interactively from a generic example based on one company’s approach to applying “Lean Thinking” and their implementation of a practical “Pull System” that reduced waste throughout their operation. Participants will understand why this company had to adopt a new way of thinking and how the employees were involved in the transformation. The practical and common-sense approach taken clarifies what pull systems are - and, what they are not.
Afternoon Session:
The afternoon ‘shop floor experience’ session forms participants into teams of 6 to 8 people who select an area in the host facility where a “Pull System” could be implemented. The teams will gather data, and apply the tools learned in Session 1 to carry out an analysis and develop a 20-day action plan that the company can follow to implement the “Pull System.”
This introductory course is designed for all employees and especially for employee teams looking to understand what pull systems are, and, the simple principles behind their operation. The workshop is presented for practitioners by practitioners and uses common sense, simple, proven approaches that involve participants in their learning experience.
Prerequisites:
To obtain maximum benefit, participants will normally be employed in an environment for which a pull system would be suitable. It is especially recommended for practitioners or anyone in a leadership role seeing a increased comfort and confidence in the application of pull systems. Participants are encouraged to bring problems and questions with them for discussion with the workshop leader.
Format:
One day. The session applies simplicity and Lean Thinking themes throughout. Its interactive format encourages all participants to become involved in exchanging insights, experiences, and performance issues. Examples of existing systems will be discussed. As a central theme for this workshop, the instructor will use an actual simple, visible and flexible system to convey the fundamentals.
Overall Training Objectives:
Upon completion of this half-day interactive training session, participants will:
- Know what a Pull System is and is not
- Know the differences between a ‘Push’ and ‘Pull’ system and be able to describe them
- Describe how Pull Systems work through the use of a simple simulation
- Discuss & understand ‘bottlenecks’ and typical methods for identifying and eliminating them
- Know and describe the effect of a Pull System on inventory, customer service, lead times and quality
- Know how Pull Systems compliment MRP II systems and how they typically work together
- Discuss where a Pull System could be used and compare them with applications not well served by a Pull System
- How to approach the implementation of a Pull System and the typical steps to follow
- Describe how people are best involved to achieve a successful pull system implementation
