Set-up Reduction
The thinking & the process … How to speed throughput & reduce cycle times through the elimination of waste and non-value added time

Description:
This hands-on workshop provides the practical concepts and understanding needed to reduce the set-up time for equipment and processes.  Lean manufacturing considers most set-up time as waste and a non-value activity that must be reduced or eliminated to increase throughput velocity and responsiveness to the customer.  The workshop consists of a brief initial training session to show participants the key thinking & principles that drive Lean environments.  High emphasis is placed on understanding how set-up, and set-up issues influence behavior and results.  This is followed by the major part of the session, which focuses on the shop floor where practitioners dissect an actual real-world set-up situation.  Participants will trace the process through the use of a video camera to gather data.  Participants will trace the process through the use of a video camera to gather data.  This will be followed by a situational analysis, a discussion on the necessary team thinking, a demonstration of effective brainstorming, and the approach to apply problem-solving techniques and implementation solutions.  Participants typically reduce most set-up times by 50% by following the process.

The workshop is presented for practitioners by practitioners and uses common sense simple, interactive approaches that get participants involved.  Examples from actual installations are included throughout.

Prerequisites:
To obtain maximum benefit, participants will normally be employed in an environment for which set-up is a part of their normal workday.  Participants should come prepared to interact and contribute to the solutions developed.

Format:
The session uses simplicity as a theme throughout.  Each session is interactive with all participants encouraged to participate in exchanging insights, experiences, and performance issues.  Illustrated examples of similar set-up reduction processes will be discussed.

Overall Training Objectives:
Upon completion of this one-day interactive training session, participants will:

  1. Know how long set-up times hurt competitiveness through their impact on inventory, customer service, lead times, and quality
  2. Understand how set-up times drive the decision making related to batch/lot sizes
  3. Know how to use video cameras to rapidly see opportunities for substantial set-up time reductions
  4. Know how to reduce set-up times through the use of commonly applied set-up tools and techniques
  5. Understand what SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) means and how it is typically implemented
  6. Be aware of how to structure a set-up team to achieve results
  7. Understand and discuss ‘bottlenecks’ and the typical approaches taken to reducing them through set-up time reduction methods
